BC Moves into Phase 2

BC has moved into Phase 2 of its immunization plan, which means more seniors are eligible for vaccines.

Starting Monday, March 8, people 90-plus, and Indigenous people 65 and older will be able to call to book vaccinations appointments. A friend or family member can also book the appointment on their behalf.

The government has provided an initial schedule of when seniors aged 80 and older can call for a vaccine appointment, and the phone numbers for call centres in each health region. Visit their website for information, or click the Find Out More button below.

Hospital staff, GPs, medical specialists, vulnerable populations, staff in community home support, and nurses caring for seniors will also be eligible for vaccine in Phase 2. Public health officials project that every British Columbians who wants a vaccine will be able to get a shot by the end of July – instead of September – during what is BC’s largest ever vaccine rollout.

New protections for renters
Everyone deserves an affordable, safe place to call home.

That’s why earlier this week our government tabled legislation to extend the existing rent freeze until the end of 2021.

That’s not all – our government is giving more security to renters by capping future rent increases to the rate of inflation, stopping illegal renovictions, and improving the dispute resolution process for tenants and landlords.

If you support these critical initiatives, let us know!

Camping registration opens Monday
COVID-19 and winter temperatures have made it hard for British Columbians to get outside. But spring is around the corner, and on Monday, British Columbians can get their first crack at camping reservations.

BC residents will get priority access to camping reservations, which will open up in July for other visitors. Most frontcountry and backcountry reservations will open on a rolling two month window. Public health officials still recommend avoiding non-essential travel, so plan to camp close to home.

Reserve a spot, pack your gear, and get ready for this year’s camping season, which is projected to be a busy one.

BC aiming to be a leader in cancer care
Cancer can be a life-changing diagnosis.

That’s why BC is committed to making our province a leader in cancer care, through investments in cutting-edge prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment. No matter where you live in BC, whether it’s a rural community, or an urban centre, you should be able to access the best care available.

Our government is working with BC Cancer and health authorities to make sure people are supported and given the best medical care possible if they get a cancer diagnosis.

Add your name if you agree with John Horgan’s cancer care action plan.

International Women’s Day
Last fall, British Columbians elected the largest ever majority women governing caucus in BC history.

Women in the BC NDP have set many other historical benchmarks too: In 1972, New Democrat Eileen Dailly was the first woman to serve as Acting President of the Executive Council, and Rosemary Brown was the first Black woman elected to a provincial legislature in Canada. More recently, Carole James was the first MLA of Metis descent elected to the Legislature, and in 2016 Melanie Mark was the first First Nations woman elected, and the first First Nations woman to serve in cabinet (2017).

There have been, and there continue to be, many other women New Democrats establishing firsts, moving BC forward, and doing critical work for their communities. On International Women’s Day March 8, it’s important to celebrate women’s achievements and raise awareness about women’s equality. More importantly, it’s a reminder to take action on behalf of women.

We’re proud of our past milestones, and the plans our BC NDP government has to continue to act on improving equality for women in our province.
