It’s about time!

The federal government announced this morning they are setting up a parliamentary committee on electoral reform and beginning consultations with Canadians on how best to change our voting system in time for the 2019 election.

It’s about time this government got to work on fulfilling its promise to end first-past-the-post.

Way back in 2004, after two years of research and consultation, the Law Commission of Canada provided a comprehensive road map for reforming our deeply flawed electoral system.

It concluded that Canada needs proportional representation (PR). The number of seats held by a party in the House of Commons should closely match the percentage of vote they received.

Again today the Liberals promised public consultation – but we’re still waiting to know when those consultations will begin.

We’ve waited more than a decade – long enough. So, the Institute has decided to give them a nudge. You can add your support for our campaign here.
