You have been asking us what is happening with the Screeners in Toronto. We would like to share the information we have.
As of today, 74 Screening Officers have been suspended by the employer. Those 74 Screening Officers face dismissal, fines and prosecution.
Their union, the CAWU does not allow shifts to be bid in order of seniority. They do this as a mechanism to control their membership. Presently, a certain number of junior screeners are working senior shifts.
Toronto Screeners are understandably angry and confused about their union’s conduct. As a result of this anger and confusion, they decided to make a statement by working to rule.
The work-to-rule taken up by the Toronto Screeners results from their anger and confusion regarding the SENIORITY RIGHTS – they have none!
Toronto Screeners have flocked to the IAM to sign membership cards to finally get a union which CARES ABOUT SENIORITY RIGHTS!
