The IAM Union previously known as the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW), represents thousands of skilled Canadian manufacturing workers who are facing a crisis in our aluminum industry.
U.S. tariffs on Canadian finished aluminum goods block access to our biggest market, while cheap offshore imports enter Canada with few barriers.
This unfair trade imbalance threatens good union jobs, local economies, and Canada’s manufacturing future.
Employers are already cutting jobs due to falling demand and without immediate government action, more layoffs will follow.
We’re calling on the government to:
- Implement a wage subsidy to sustain the skilled employees of the Novelis Kingston plant amidst U.S. tariff pressures;
- Provide targeted funding – previously seen with the Strategic Innovation Fund for the steel industry – to support projects that will create jobs, strengthen supply chains, improve competitiveness in the domestic market, and enable new product lines such as aluminum cans currently not produced in Canada; and
- Impose tariffs on unfairly traded offshore imports of finished aluminum goods to ensure Canadian producers can compete on a level playing field with foreign suppliers.
Canada’s aluminum sector is vital not only for jobs but for our economy and national security. The time to act is now. Join us in demanding the government protect our workers and industry.
