{"id":5471,"date":"2018-02-08T19:24:14","date_gmt":"2018-02-08T19:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=5471"},"modified":"2018-02-08T19:31:16","modified_gmt":"2018-02-08T19:31:16","slug":"bcfed-dave-barrett-a-bold-premier-for-a-bold-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=5471","title":{"rendered":"BCFED &#8211; Dave Barrett: A bold premier for a bold era"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Dave Barrett: A bold premier for a bold era<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>February 2, 2018<\/p>\n<p>The labour movement is marking the life of BC\u2019s first NDP Premier Dave Barrett, a friend of working people, and a politician who had a profound impact on our province, says BC Federation of Labour President Irene Lanzinger.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1551\" src=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130-60x58.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>BC\u2019s 26<sup>th<\/sup> premier, Barrett lead a reform-minded government that implemented a long list of measures between 1972 and 1975. Among these were a new labour code and a Labour Relations Board that fundamentally altered relationships between unions and employers that had all too often ended up in the courts.<\/p>\n<p>Other lasting accomplishments include the Agricultural Land Reserve, ICBC, and the BC Ambulance Service.\u00a0 Legislation passed by the NDP at the time also made it possible for government employees to join a union.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a bold premier for a bold era.
