{"id":5251,"date":"2017-09-14T02:18:18","date_gmt":"2017-09-14T02:18:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=5251"},"modified":"2017-09-14T02:19:49","modified_gmt":"2017-09-14T02:19:49","slug":"bc-fed-bc-ndp-budget-update-brings-relief-for-working-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=5251","title":{"rendered":"BC FED &#8211; BC NDP budget update brings relief for working families"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>BC NDP budget update brings relief for working families<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>NEWS RELEASE<br \/>\n**For Immediate Release**<br \/>\nSeptember 11, 2017<\/p>\n<p><strong>Victoria<\/strong> \u2013 Working families will see some relief and new opportunities based on the priorities set by the new NDP government\u2019s budget update, says the BC Federation of Labour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinally we see a government ready to invest in vital public services,\u201d said BCFED President Irene Lanzinger. \u201cAfter 16 years of underfunding and neglect, this budget takes the first steps to address the affordability crisis and support working families.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1551\" src=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130-60x58.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a big job to fix the mess created by the BC Liberals, and this budget is a good start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lanzinger said she is pleased that the NDP government is following through with budget update funding for key election commitments, including:<br \/>\n\u2022 almost $500 million for a $100 per month increase in social assistance rates;<br \/>\n\u2022 funding to restore free Adult Basic Education and English as an Additional Language<br \/>\ntraining to help British Columbians develop job skills;<br \/>\n\u2022 increasing taxes for high income earners and corporations; and<br \/>\n\u2022 maintaining the previous government\u2019s undertaking to help the resource sector<br \/>\nmaintain jobs by phasing out the PST on electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the BCFED\u2019s ongoing Fight for $15 minimum wage campaign is the call for a poverty reduction strategy. And Lanzinger says she\u2019s pleased to see a number of spending<br \/>\ncommitments that underpin a poverty reduction plan reflected in the budget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a province as wealthy as BC, our poverty levels are unacceptable. We\u2019ve been calling on<br \/>\ngovernment for years to establish a poverty reduction plan.
