{"id":5161,"date":"2017-08-02T04:45:36","date_gmt":"2017-08-02T04:45:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=5161"},"modified":"2017-08-02T04:52:22","modified_gmt":"2017-08-02T04:52:22","slug":"strike-at-yyz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=5161","title":{"rendered":"TRANSPORTATION DISTRICT 140 &#8211; STRIKE AT YYZ (ENGLISH)\/GR\u00c8VE \u00c0 YYZ (FRENCH)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>STRIKE AT YYZ<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>At approximately 9:30 pm on Thursday July 27th, the baggage and cargo handlers at Swissport in Toronto legally went on strike after bargaining talks derailed. The workers were presented with a last and final offer from Swissport that did not meet the needs of the Teamster 419 membership.<\/p>\n<p>This strike is extremely disturbing as the corporation (Swissport) is widely utilizing temp workers or SCABS to work in the secured areas of the airport and that the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) is assisting the corporation by granting the temp agency(s) Licenses to Operate at Canada\u2019s largest airport.<\/p>\n<p>Swissport began the process of hiring hundreds of replacement workers over the past couple of months allegedly claiming it was for \u201csummer help.\u201d Their Union has since filed an Unfair Labour Practice with the Canadian Industrial Relations Board and a hearing is scheduled on Wednesday morning (August 2nd) to discuss and hopefully address the complaint.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/imagesCAY0L0NQ.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2293\" src=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/imagesCAY0L0NQ.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/imagesCAY0L0NQ.jpg 225w, https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/imagesCAY0L0NQ-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/imagesCAY0L0NQ-60x59.jpg 60w, https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/imagesCAY0L0NQ-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Transportation District 140 of the IAMAW fully supports these workers in their struggle to reach a new agreement and denounces the use and method of replacement workers that are being implemented during this dispute.<\/p>\n<p>We encourage IAM Members to show their support by walking the established picket lines at a location near your workplace. Our members can be supportive by picketing with them on your own time (such as before\/after work, or days off, etc.). At the same time we underline that it is imperative that you attend work and arrive on time and return from lunch and break periods on time. It is imperative that you remove your RAIC when walking the picket lines and be mindful of your employer\u2019s dress code policies. We don\u2019t want to confuse the public about who is on strike so street clothes are generally the best attire when walking the picket line.<\/p>\n<p>All IAM bargaining units and affiliated Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) bargaining units Union members should be advised that accepting an assignment to perform the work being struck by the Teamster 419 members will be deemed as \u201cSCAB WORKERS.\u201d As such, we discourage any union member from accepting an assignment to perform the work being struck and to advise your Union representatives immediately if any union member is canvassed to perform the Swissport work being struck.<\/p>\n<p>Solidarity is about more than Unions. It\u2019s about working with people on the things that matter. It is also about removing the boundaries that prevent us from working together. It is about believing that what hurts my neighbor also hurts myself, that when I need a neighbor I have no right to expect help if I have not first helped others. Without Solidarity, without considering the needs of others, we will continue to be unnoticed and taken advantage of. L\u2019offre finale de Swissport pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e aux travailleurs ne r\u00e9pondait pas aux besoins des membres de la section locale 419 des Teamsters.<\/p>\n<p>La gr\u00e8ve est extr\u00eamement pr\u00e9occupante en raison du fait que la compagnie (Swissport) fait appel aux travailleurs int\u00e9rimaires ou aux BRISEURS DE GR\u00c8VE pour travailler dans les zones r\u00e9glement\u00e9es de l\u2019a\u00e9roport, et que la Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) lui facilite la t\u00e2che en accordant des licences aux agences de travail int\u00e9rimaire leur permettant de travailler \u00e0 l\u2019a\u00e9roport le plus grand du Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Swissport a d\u00e9but\u00e9 l\u2019embauche de centaines de travailleurs de remplacement au cours des derniers mois pr\u00e9tendant la \u00ab p\u00e9riode estivale \u00bb. Nos membres peuvent apporter leur soutien en les joignant sur les lignes de piquetage pendant leur temps libre (avant ou apr\u00e8s leurs heures de travail, pendant leurs jours de cong\u00e9, etc.). Parall\u00e8lement, nous soulignons qu\u2019il est imp\u00e9ratif que vous vous pr\u00e9sentiez au travail et que vous soyez \u00e0 l\u2019heure apr\u00e8s vos pauses. Il est imp\u00e9ratif que vous retiriez votre CIZR avant de vous pr\u00e9senter sur les lignes de piquetage et que vous soyez attentifs aux politiques relatives au Code vestimentaire de votre employeur. Nous ne voulons pas semer la confusion dans le public sur l\u2019identit\u00e9 des travailleurs qui sont en gr\u00e8ve; les v\u00eatements de ville sont donc la meilleure tenue pour faire du piquetage.<\/p>\n<p>Tous les membres faisant partie des conventions collectives de l\u2019AIMTA ainsi que ceux des conventions collectives affili\u00e9es au Congr\u00e8s du travail du Canada sont avis\u00e9s que s\u2019ils acceptent de faire du travail des membres en gr\u00e8ve de la section locale 419 des Teamsters, ils seront consid\u00e9r\u00e9s \u00ab BRISEURS DE GR\u00c8VE \u00bb. Ainsi, nous d\u00e9courageons tout membre d\u2019un syndicat d\u2019accepter une affectation pour assurer les t\u00e2ches des travailleurs en gr\u00e8ve et nous vous demandons d\u2019informer imm\u00e9diatement vos repr\u00e9sentants syndicaux si des membres sont sollicit\u00e9s pour faire du travail de Swissport qui est en gr\u00e8ve.<\/p>\n<p>La solidarit\u00e9 va plus loin que le mouvement syndical. Il s\u2019agit de travailler ensemble sur ce qui compte. Il s\u2019agit aussi d\u2019\u00e9liminer les limitations nous emp\u00eachant de travailler ensemble. Il s\u2019agit de prendre conscience que ce qui nuit \u00e0 mon voisin me nuit \u00e9galement, que lorsque j\u2019ai besoin d\u2019aide, je ne dois pas m\u2019attendre \u00e0 en recevoir si je n\u2019ai pas d\u2019abord donn\u00e9. Sans la solidarit\u00e9, sans tenir compte des besoins des autres, nous demeurerons inaper\u00e7us et on continuera \u00e0 abuser de nous.
