{"id":5116,"date":"2017-07-13T09:31:28","date_gmt":"2017-07-13T09:31:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=5116"},"modified":"2017-07-13T09:33:39","modified_gmt":"2017-07-13T09:33:39","slug":"bcfed-bcfed-eager-to-work-with-new-ndp-government-to-improve-worker-safety-after-recent-succession-of-tragic-accidents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=5116","title":{"rendered":"BCFED &#8211; BCFED eager to work with new NDP government to improve worker safety after recent succession of tragic accidents"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>BCFED eager to work with new NDP government to improve worker safety after recent <\/strong><strong>succession of tragic accidents<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>NEWS RELEASE<br \/>\n**For Immediate Release**<br \/>\nJuly 11, 2017<\/p>\n<p>With a week left before the swearing-in of Premier John Horgan and a new cabinet, the BC<br \/>\nFederation of Labour says it\u2019s gearing up to work with the new government to address workplace health and safety issues, where urgent action is required.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile BC has been gripped with the change in government over the past four weeks, there have been a succession of tragic workplace accidents where workers have been killed or seriously injured,\u201d says Irene Lanzinger, president of the labour federation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith a new government committed to improving safety to protect workers, we\u2019re optimistic that we can make headway,\u201d Lanzinger says. \u201cThere are significant opportunities for government, the Workers\u2019 Compensation Board, the labour movement, and employers to work together to ensure that everyone goes home safely at the end of the work day.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1551\" src=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130-60x58.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the last 45 days, tragic accidents that have resulted in the death or serious injury of workers include:<br \/>\n\u2022 three deaths including a Kamloops mill worker, an agricultural worker in the North<br \/>\nOkanagan, and a transport worker who was run over at a Richmond cargo handling facility;<br \/>\n\u2022 high profile injuries sustained by two traffic flaggers who were run down by a speeding<br \/>\nmotorist at a Burnaby road construction site;<br \/>\n\u2022 a roofer who was seriously injured in a three-story fall from a Victoria construction site<br \/>\nwhere a safety harness was not used nor were guard rails in place; and<br \/>\n\u2022 two workers who were hurt in an explosion at a natural gas facility outside Fort St. John.<\/p>\n<p>In the same time frame, details emerged about the paltry fines levied on employers who are found to be at fault for on-the-job deaths or injuries. In one circumstance, a Revelstoke logging company was fined $13,800 for an accident that killed an employee.
