{"id":5081,"date":"2017-06-27T23:19:27","date_gmt":"2017-06-27T23:19:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=5081"},"modified":"2017-06-27T23:19:39","modified_gmt":"2017-06-27T23:19:39","slug":"bc-federation-of-labour-offers-free-english-classes-in-richmond-vancouver-to-promote-safer-workplaces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=5081","title":{"rendered":"BC Federation of Labour offers free English classes in Richmond, Vancouver to promote safer workplaces"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>BC Federation of Labour offers free English classes in Richmond, Vancouver to promote safer workplaces<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><strong>Vancouver <\/strong>&#8211; The BC Federation of Labour is offering free English as an Additional Language (EAL) courses to help new English language speakers in the workforce and promote improved workplace health and safety.<\/p>\n<p>In Vancouver, the course runs from <span data-term=\"goog_1740546796\">5:45 pm to 7:45 pm<\/span> Tuesdays and Thursdays for 12 weeks, starting <span data-term=\"goog_1740546797\">July 4<\/span>, at the BCFED office, 200-5118 Joyce Street, near the Joyce SkyTrain station.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1551\" src=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130-60x58.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Richmond, the course runs from <span data-term=\"goog_1740546798\">10 am to 2 pm<\/span> Fridays for 12 weeks, starting <span data-term=\"goog_1740546799\">July 7<\/span>, at Richmond Multicultural Community Services office, 220-4351 No. 3 Road, at the Aberdeen SkyTrain station.<\/p>\n<p>The workshops are open to all workers or those seeking work throughout the Lower Mainland who want to improve their English language skills. At the same time, participants learn about workplace health and safety rules, their rights as workers, and employers\u2019 obligations to provide a safe working environment.<\/p>\n<p>Upon completion, participants in the program receive a certificate and are invited to a graduation dinner.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This program is unique in Canada,&#8221; said Irene Lanzinger, president of the BCFED. &#8220;We&#8217;re trying to overcome any barriers that people have to accessing health and safety information to help make workplaces safer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The program\u2014which has been offered since 2008\u2014started in response to high profile tragedies that highlighted the need for increased awareness of health and safety rights and responsibilities for new Canadians with language or literacy barriers.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, a van carrying farm workers was involved in a motor vehicle accident near Abbotsford. Three workers were killed, and 14 were seriously injured.
