{"id":4782,"date":"2017-01-26T09:40:06","date_gmt":"2017-01-26T09:40:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=4782"},"modified":"2017-01-26T09:40:06","modified_gmt":"2017-01-26T09:40:06","slug":"bcfed-news-release-clark-jobs-update-offers-little-optimism-for-many-bc-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=4782","title":{"rendered":"BCFED news release: Clark jobs update offers little optimism for many BC workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Clark jobs update offers little optimism for many BC workers<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>**For Immediate Release**<br \/>\nJanuary 23, 2017<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clark jobs update offers little optimism for many BC workers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vancouver<\/strong> &#8211; The BC Federation of Labour says the BC Liberal\u2019s jobs update announcement this morning does little to address fundamental questions about the quality of jobs and how work supports families and communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just about the number of jobs an economy creates, it\u2019s also about the quality of those jobs that counts as much or more,\u201d says Lanzinger. <a href=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1551\" src=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130-60x58.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre jobs stable? Do they pay well to support families and communities? Are there good working conditions? Are they equally spread across the province so that every British Columbian can share the benefits of economic growth?\u201d questions Lanzinger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn all these questions Premier Clark missed the boat with this morning\u2019s update.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lanzinger says the Federation is disappointed that the BC Liberal\u2019s continue to ignore the plight of low wage workers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are 500,000 workers in this province\u2014a staggering 25% of the non-management labour force\u2014 that earn poverty wages. A good jobs plan would make higher wages a priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The proliferation of precarious, part-time work, says Lanzinger, with low wages and unstable conditions is a big challenge for the BC economy that the Liberals ignore. Of the 72,000 new jobs in BC for 2016, more than half were part-time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile the job picture is bleak in all regions of the province outside the Lower Mainland and Victoria with employment numbers falling in 2016.
