{"id":4701,"date":"2016-12-12T11:38:18","date_gmt":"2016-12-12T11:38:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=4701"},"modified":"2016-12-12T11:38:18","modified_gmt":"2016-12-12T11:38:18","slug":"bcfed-fraser-institute-report-highlights-benefits-of-union-membership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=4701","title":{"rendered":"BCFED &#8211; Fraser Institute report highlights benefits of union membership"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Fraser Institute report highlights benefits of union membership<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>NEWS RELEASE<br \/>\n**For Immediate Release**<br \/>\nDecember 8, 2016<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fraser Institute report highlights benefits of union membership, says BCFED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vancouver<\/strong> &#8211; A report released today by the Fraser Institute offers compelling reasons for workers to join unions to improve wages and benefits, says the BC Federation of Labour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether it is in the private or public sector, the report shows that workers who are union members<br \/>\nhave better pay and benefits than workers who aren\u2019t union members,\u201d says BCFED President Irene Lanzinger. <a href=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1551\" src=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130-60x58.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the study clearly highlights the benefits of union membership and sends a clear message for non-union workers. If you want to gain more respect and have more power to make working life pay better, then join a union.\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you would like a paid leave day to deal with a sick child or an aging parent, then join a union because unions have negotiated these benefits,\u201d Lanzinger says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are a woman worker and tired of being paid less for doing the same work as a male<br \/>\ncounterpart, then join a union because we`ve negotiated pay equity to address wage discrimination against women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are one of BC`s half-million workers earning less than $15 an hour, then join a union to help lift you out of poverty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want a secure income for your retirement, then join a union to negotiate a pension plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Normally, says Lanzinger, the Fraser Institute\u2014the official think tank for the 1%\u2014can be counted on to try and pull people down rather than lift everyone up. \u201cBut in this case we appreciate their help in getting the message out about the benefits of belonging to a union, so that better wages and benefits can happen here.\u201d<br \/>\nIn the year ahead, the BC labour movement will be more aggressive on the organizing front to help more workers join unions to help them win better pay and benefits.
