It\u2019s about time!<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

The federal government announced this morning they are setting up a parliamentary committee on electoral reform and beginning consultations with Canadians on how best to change our voting system in time for the 2019 election.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s about time this government got to work on fulfilling its promise to end first-past-the-post.<\/p>\n

Way back in 2004, after two years of research and consultation, the Law Commission of Canada provided a comprehensive road map for reforming our deeply flawed electoral system.<\/p>\n

It concluded that Canada needs proportional representation (PR). The number of seats held by a party in the House of Commons should closely match the percentage of vote they received.<\/p>\n

Again today the Liberals promised public consultation – but we’re still waiting to know when those consultations will begin.<\/p>\n

We’ve waited more than a decade \u2013 long enough. So, the Institute has decided to give them a nudge. You can add your support for our campaign here<\/span><\/a>.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

I published an op-ed piece in yesterday\u2019s Globe and Mail<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with two allies in the fight for PR<\/span><\/a> and the Institute has launched a national petition<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n
