2 Solidarity Actions in Seconds<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

On Canada Day we sent you an appeal from two unions whose members were walking picket lines over the holiday.\u00a0 Despite it being a stat holiday and the start of the summer vacation season, hundreds of you responded.<\/p>\n

Thanks.\u00a0 Not just from LabourStart but from those workers.<\/p>\n

But while two appeals is about all that can comfortably fit in one e-mail, there are many more struggles out there and today we\u2019ve got a couple more that demand your attention.<\/p>\n

Late last week you probably saw the news about the flight cancellations at Pearson Airport in Toronto.\u00a0 IAM members who refuel aircraft there and at Montreal\u2019s airport are facing a stark and painful choice: lose their jobs or take huge cuts to their wages and benefits.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re trying to forge a third alternative: maintaining their good jobs.<\/p>\n

The issue in the strike at Halifax\u2019s water and waste water system is just as clear-cut: the employer wants to roll back the workers\u2019 pensions by upwards of 30%.\u00a0 Facing poverty in retirement if they cave, the members of CUPE 227 and 1431 have been out for over a month now.
\nCUPE is asking us all to send protest messages to the Halifax Councillors who sit on the Water Board.<\/p>\n
