{"id":3180,"date":"2015-03-16T02:29:05","date_gmt":"2015-03-16T02:29:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=3180"},"modified":"2015-03-16T03:24:13","modified_gmt":"2015-03-16T03:24:13","slug":"bc-fed-government-announcement-abandons-working-people-guarantees-workers-will-remain-in-poverty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/?p=3180","title":{"rendered":"BC FED &#8211; Government announcement abandons working people, guarantees workers will remain in poverty"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>BC FEDERATION OF LABOUR<\/strong> &#8211; Government announcement abandons working people, guarantees workers will remain in poverty<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Arial; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Arial; font-size: medium;\"><b>VANCOUVER <\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u2013 The BC Federation of Labour is extremely disappointed with the BC Liberal government\u2019s announcement on minimum wage, saying it will do nothing to lift minimum wage workers out of poverty. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today\u2019s announcement guarantees that hundreds of thousands of British Columbians will continue to live in poverty for years to come,&#8221; said Irene Lanzinger, President of the BC Federation of Labour. &#8220;Lifting the minimum wage to $10.45 is nowhere close to the increase that is needed \u2013 and indexing a poverty wage only entrenches people in poverty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The BC Federation of Labour has been calling on the government to lift the minimum wage to $15\/hr, a wage that would lift a full-time worker above the poverty line.<\/p>\n<p>Government announced a $0.20 lift to the minimum wage, and a commitment to index that wage to annual CPI lifts.<a href=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1551\" src=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg\" alt=\"bcfed130\" width=\"130\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/bcfed130-60x58.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Under the government plan, the minimum wage will not reach $15\/hr until 2034. That is unacceptable,&#8221; said Lanzinger. &#8220;The government has abandoned the lowest paid workers in our province, and done so at a time when they are giving tax breaks to the wealthiest 2%.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lanzinger pointed to Budget 2015, which provided a tax break to people earning over $150,000.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Increasing the minimum wage is an important investment in our economy \u2013 ensuring working people have money to spend in their community is essential to supporting local business,&#8221; said Lanzinger. &#8220;Other jurisdictions have figured it out \u2013 they know that stagnant and poverty wages are what hurt the economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lanzinger also pointed out that there was no formal consultation on the government announcement. &#8220;We have been actively lobbying, but never did the government engage in public, thoughtful consultation with stakeholders on what the wage should be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Arial; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Arial; font-size: medium;\">&#8220;The government needs to change course. BC\u2019s overall poverty rate in second highest in the country,&#8221; said Lanzinger. &#8220;Increasing the minimum wage is a vital step in a poverty reduction plan.&#8221; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Quick Facts on Minimum Wage:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Arial; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Arial; font-size: medium;\">\uf0b7 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">More than half a million British Columbians earn $15 or less. (24% of all workers) <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>60% are women<\/p>\n<p>12% are seniors<\/p>\n<p>58% are 25 or older<\/p>\n<p>\uf0b7 More than 120,000 people in BC earn the minimum wage \u2013 (6.4% of all workers).<\/p>\n<p>47% are 25 and older<\/p>\n<p>63% are women<\/p>\n<p>8% are seniors<\/p>\n<p>**only 23% are students living at home**<\/p>\n<p>(Note: the government says that 52% are living at home \u2013 but not all of these are students as they suggest. Only 23% are students, the others are people who can\u2019t afford to move out.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Arial; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Arial; font-size: medium;\">\uf0b7 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Most minimum wage employers are mid-to-large businesses. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>65% have 20+ employees<\/p>\n<p>46% (nearly half) have 500+ employees<\/p>\n<p>55% of minimum wage employees have been in their job for at least a year<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Arial; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Arial; font-size: medium;\">\uf0b7 Recent research from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, <\/span><\/span><i><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Dispelling Minimum Wage Mythology <\/span><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">(Stanford, Brennan 2014), found almost no evidence that minimum wage increases hurt jobs.
