Federation of Labour is a gold sponsor of the Skills Canada BC and\u00a0national competitions, and we will be pursuing a &#8220;women in trades&#8221; theme for this yeads\u00a0activities at the events. The provincial competition will take place on April 17,2013 at\u00a0the Abbotsford Tradex, while the national competition will be at BC Place June 5-8, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The Skills Canada competitions are intended to stimulate youth interest in employment\u00a0in trades and technologies by hosting skills competitions in a variety of occupational skill\u00a0areas, in a series of regional, provincial and national competitions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Journey-Fab-Logo-710x360.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1130\" alt=\"Journey-Fab-Logo-710x360\" src=\"https:\/\/iamaw16.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Journey-Fab-Logo-710x360-300x152.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Federation will have booth space at the events, and we would like to use it to\u00a0create &#8220;living book&#8221; opportunities for young women to talk to tradeswomen about their\u00a0experiences at our booth. Even today, women completing apprenticeships in\u00a0traditionally male-dominated trades comprise only two to three percent of all graduates,\u00a0while after including other trade occupations such as hairdressing and cooking, women\u00a0comprise only nine percent of all graduates. More support and encouragement is\u00a0essential to gain greater equality.<br \/>\nAs well, we have been asked to participate with BCIT in organizing volunteer\u00a0tradeswomen to participate in the &#8220;Anything you can do&#8230;&#8221; event that will be held in\u00a0conjunction with the Skills Canada BC competition on April 17. The aim of this event is\u00a0to bring together young female students in grades 9-12 from various high schools with\u00a0women employed in a diverse range of sectors represented at the BC skills competition.\u00a0During the event, participants will &#8220;Discover Trades and Technologies Firsthand&#8221; all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Skills Canada Competitions\u00a0Journeywomen Volunteers form attached via pdf file below.
